Friday
6th November - Blade Shearing Australian Record

There was much preparation and behind the scenes that went on to
assist John Nicholls to blade shear over 200 sheep on Friday 6 November
2009. Dale McDonnell, local operator transported the sheep required
for the day.
John's attempt was to blade shear 200 sheep over the normal shearing
day, being 7.30am to 5.30pm with morning and afternoon smoko and
an hour long lunch break - an 8 hour shearing day. But he shore
with "old time" blades an amazing 216 sheep. He passed
the 200 estimate at 4.45pm. He started the day with some tougher
sheep, but over the day John Nicholls shore more than 50 each run
with 57 in the third run, sharpening his blades after each sheep.
Local woolclasser, Marjorie Carpenter cleared the board all day
long for John, others helped from time to time either gathering
the wool or sweeping the board. He shore sheep owned by Wayne Brodie
and Grantly Robertson on the day.
John had two certified shearing judges in Austin Grigg and Alan
Edwards from Caramut. They both kept an eye on the sheep that were
shown and disallowed 7 sheep which are not included in the total
of 216. Richie Foster, Nic Doelle and Kelvin Lambert made sure that
John had sheep kept up to him.
It was quite a warm day on Friday and many came to the shearing
shed to watch the record attempt, not just locals. A bus of hospital
residents, people from Bordertown, a shearing fanatic from Birchip,
St. Malachy's School children and so did quite a few "old guns".
The shed was very quiet as John shore on without the aid of a shearing
plant and listened to his ipod to keep focussed.
The crowd near the end of the day.

The
noise of the day increased during the fourth run as more came in
to watch as a much younger shearer, Reagan Hamilton from Apsley
attempted to shear 30 lambs in 30 minutes. Reagan's sister from
Wakool, NSW and her family came along to watch, along with his partner,
Sheree Venables and their 12 day old baby Jai. Come 4pm Reagan set
about to shear with normal shearing equipment 30 lambs in 30 minutes,
but amazingly when 30 minutes passed he actually shore over 39 lambs
and to complete the 40th he was clocked off 30 min and 39 sec -
one he shore in only 31 seconds. His lambs were prepared with danger
points removed, giving him a good go at this attempt. There was
wool flying here and there, but Jacqui Foster ably kept up to his
pace by keeping the wool away. Stuart Grigg, local shearing trainer,
kept time of each lamb he shore during the half hour.
Not long after finishing this quick shear, he rang his mum in Wakool
- quite proud of his attempt.
While this was happening, John Nicholls kept quietly blade shearing
until 5.30pm.
It is estimated that approximately 250 people came throughout the
day to watch these two attempt a record.
To attempt a record like this there is much preparation - John is
constantly blade shearing, and prior to this attempt shore at Caulfield
Partner’s farm at Connewirricoo. Reagan is shearing for Austin
and Jan Grigg shearing contractors.
In
the shearing shed shearing memorabilia belonging to Laurie Herman
from Hamilton was displayed. Laurie was a blade shearer prior to
the war.
End
of the day shearers blade shore the remaining sheep, being L-R Robert
Harding (Nhill), Jim Barnett (NZ), John Nicholls, Kelvin Lambert,
Reagan Hamilton and Richie Foster with Michelle Nokes, 3yo Riley
Nokes, Marjorie Carpenter and Jacqui Foster assisting and Nic Doelle,
Alan Edwards, Keith McLachlan (hidden) and Austin Grigg in the pens.
